ACBHC recognizes a variety of sources of training as relevant to the purposes of the Commission.Trainings to meet the requirements for certification by the Commission can be met in several ways.

  • NAADAC – Certified Training
  • College or University Coursework
  • Workshop/Seminar Attendance
  • Agency In-service Training
  • Distance Learning
  • Statewide or National Conferences
  • Certified Training Given by Self to Others

    1.  ACBHC/NAADAC:  Training approved by NAADAC provided in Alaska, the lower 48 or through correspondence is automatically approved by ACBHC.

    2.  College or University Coursework:  The Commission will consider college or university course work that is related to the field of behavioral health (e.g. psychology, social work, human services, nursing, counseling, communications etc.) as training.  An official transcript must be submitted as proof that the course was passed and completed.  A course description may be requested by the Commission to clarify the content of the course and its applicability to the counselor competencies.  College course work is calculated into training hours as follows:

  • 1 quarter hour =  0.8 semester hour
  • 1 quarter hour = 10.0 contact hours
  • 1 semester hour = 1.3 quarter hours
  • 1 semester hour = 15.0 contact hours
  • 1 trimester credit = 5.0 contact hours
  • 1 CEU = 10.0 contact hours
  • 1 clock hour = 1.0 training hour

    3.  Workshop/Seminar Attendance:  Workshops or seminars whose content is relevant to the ACBHC counselor competencies (Foundations and Practice Dimensions) are an eligible source of training to meet certification requirements.

    4.  Agency In-service Training:  In-service training offered within an agency and approved by ACBHC is an eligible source of training to meet certification if the content is relevant to competencies.  Such training is expected to be submitted in advance to the Commission, is considered on a case-by-case basis, and is computed on a contact hour basis.  Documentation of in-service training shall include, at a minimum, course syllabus, credentials of the instructor and proof of completion signed by the trainer.

    5.  Distance Learning:  Distance learning includes correspondence courses, internet offerings, video instruction or other media-related training that is self-directed.  Distance learning must have a predetermined number of hours of educational credit (i.e. the student should not be making the determination of how many hours a course of study is worth).  Distance learning can account for any amount of the required training during the current certification period.
